The main challenges in social health protection in Ghana and Tanzania is to understand how to increase and sustain coverage, including people in the informal sector, and how to ensure effective essential health services as well as financial risk protection to the poorest segments of the population and other groups who are excluded. The R4D project intends to address the two related challenges that are crucial for supporting the development of an inclusive social health protection system in Ghana and Tanzania: 1) How can the excluded population be better identified and reached to include them in financing protection mechanisms and access to needed services?; and 2) How can health system governance (with a focus on voice, transparency and accountability) be improved to support inclusive and sustainable social health protection systems. The results of this project will have impact at several levels contributing to increase access to higher quality, more accountable and better governed health services in the countries and ultimately helping to achieve the health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) targets.
